Lemna - Wikipedia. Lemna is a genus of free- floating aquatic plants from the duckweed family. These rapidly growing plants have found uses as a model system for studies in community ecology, basic plant biology, ecotoxicology, and production of biopharmaceuticals, and as a source of animal feeds for agriculture and aquaculture.
Currently, 1. 4 species of Lemna are recognised. Most are small, not exceeding 5 mm in length, except Lemna trisulca, which is elongated and has a branched structure. Lemna thalli have a single root, which distinguishes this genus from the related genera. Weekly Box Office March 3-9, 2017. Note: Weekly box office charts 7-day results (Friday through Thursday). Spirodela and Landoltia. The plants grow mainly by vegetative reproduction: two daughter plants bud off from the adult plant. This form of growth allows very rapid colonisation of new water. Duckweeds are flowering plants, and nearly all of them are known to reproduce sexually, flowering and producing seed under appropriate conditions. Certain duckweeds (such as L. It is also being used as an expression system for economical production of complex biopharmaceuticals. Duckweed meal (dried duckweed) is a good cattle feed. It contains 2. 5- 4. As a bioassay. Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). Both of these species have been studied extensively for use in phytotoxicity tests. Genetic variability in responses to toxicants can occur in Lemna, and data are insufficient to recommend a specific clone for testing. The US EPA test uses aseptic technique. The OECD test is not conducted axenically, but steps are taken at stages during the test procedure to keep contamination by other organisms to a minimum. Depending on the objectives of the test and the regulatory requirements, testing may be performed with renewal (semistatic and flow- through) or without renewal (static) of the test solution. Renewal is useful for substances that are rapidly lost from solution as a result of volatilisation, photodegradation, precipitation, or biodegradation. Production of biopharmaceuticals. Expression constructs were engineered to cause Lemna to secrete the transformed proteins into the growth medium at high yield. Since the Lemna is grown on a simple medium, this substantially reduces the burden of protein purification in preparing such proteins for medical use, promising substantial reductions in manufacturing costs. Although duckweed can tolerate temperatures ranging from 6 to 3. The acceptable p. H range is 5 to 9, but better growth is obtained in the p. H range of 6. 5 to 7. A minimum water depth of 1 ft is desirable to prevent excessive temperature swings. High nitrogen levels, for example 2. M urea, have provided a protein content in the range of 4. The water may typically contain 6. Fertiliser is required on a daily basis for optimal growth. Duckweed can be farmed organically, with nutrients being supplied from a variety of sources, for example cattle manure, pig waste, biogas plant slurry, or other organic matter in slurry form. Because of the rapid growth of duckweed, daily harvesting is necessary to achieve optimal yields. Harvesting is done such that less than 1 kg/m. Klotho levels in patients without microalbuminuria were similar to levels found in healthy adults. First author of the study, Dr Giuseppe Maltese, from the Cardiovascular Division at King's College London said: 'For the first time, Klotho has been linked to kidney disease in type 1 diabetes patients and this finding represents an exciting step towards developing new markers for disease and potentially new treatments.'Senior author, Dr Janaka Karalliedde, said: 'With further research using larger cohorts of patients with type 1 and 2 diabetes we hope to expand the scope of this work to identify at an early stage patients at high risk of progression of kidney disease and cardiovascular disease.'Dr Richard Siow, a co- author of the study, recently published research which showed the protective effects of Klotho in cardiovascular cells and said: 'This study highlights the important clinical and basic science research that is being undertaken on Klotho at King's.'Our research will help scientists to better understand the mechanisms by which this hormone benefits healthy ageing, as well as how deficits in Klotho lead to age related diseases. We are conducting further research on the role of Klotho in ageing and longevity as part of ARK (Ageing Research at King's) research initiatives.'Limitations of this study include its relatively small and selective sample size and the cross- sectional design, which is unable to identify a causal relationship between Klotho and development of kidney disease. Heart patients could have quick, non- invasive, magnetic resonance (MR) scans to determine if they need to have a procedure to widen a blocked or narrowed coronary artery instead of more invasive tests, new research from King's College London shows. In most cases patients will undergo coronary angiogram to identify whether their arteries are narrowed and determine how severe any blockages are. This is considered the gold- standard test. During the procedure a thin tube, called a catheter, is placed into a blood vessel in the groin, or the wrist, and guided to the area of the suspected blockage. Once it reaches its destination, iodine dye is injected into the vessel so that areas of narrowing shows more clearly in X- ray images. Around 1. 00,0. 00 coronary angiograms were performed in the UK in 2. X- ray radiation. The MR Perfusion Imaging to Guide Management of Patients with Stable Coronary Artery Disease (MR- INFORM) study randomly assigned 9. MR scan to assess if they needed further treatment. All patients were monitored for one year and any major event, such as heart attack, an angioplasty, or death was recorded. In both treatment groups patients did well with a very low event rate; 3. This parity in event rates provides strong evidence that MR scans are as effective as angiograms at predicting the need for medical intervention. Lead scientist on the study, Professor Eike Nagel, said: . Until now, most of these patients were sent for an invasive angiography, which can be uncomfortable. Now, we can examine them with magnetic resonance imaging, a fast, non- invasive test, which does not require radiation. We know that we can trust the results and manage patients based on these findings. This will allow medics to shift resources from unnecessary invasive procedures to better diagnostic tools for the benefit of our patients.. They are very inquisitive, clever, mischievous, loyal and loving creatures. The key to a happy bunny is giving them the best care and accommodation. Learn to understand your rabbits behaviour and you will learn so much yourself. In this section. Nose rubs are a favourite. Bunnies can learn little tricks to test your patience, like refusing to go in their bedroom area at night time and giving you the run around for a while. Bunnies can be just like a child and want to play with things they are not supposed to or go in. So wash your hands and maybe even change your clothes if you have been around other people. This means your bunny is very happy and relaxed too. Scenting with their chins. Bunnies are very territorial animals and will mark objects by rubbing their chin on everything in their area to mark their territory. Every time you see your bunny doing this its a bit like them saying . Sometimes one thump on its own means they are annoyed. Eyes bulging. Means your bunny is terrified. Chattering their teeth quietly. This is the equivalent to a cat purring and you will usually witness this when you are stroking them. Loud chattering/grating of teeth. Means they are in pain. See your vet asap. Sitting or hiding in a corner for long periods of time. Means they are unwell. See your vet asap. Screaming. Means extreme danger & if they are that scared to scream, there is a high risk of them having a heart attack. Check for predators and check their accommodation is secure. Training bunny. Litter training. Litter trays come in all shapes and sizes, but the bigger the tray the more hay you can put in to encourage your rabbit to eat hay whilst he poops. Seed trays and drip trays can be ideal as they do come in big sizes and all kinds of shapes and are cheaper to buy than some actual litter trays. By using sawdust or Megazorb to line the tray helps absorb more urine and reduces odours too. Do not use pine or cedar shavings as these can cause liver damage. Understanding your rabbits behaviour. If he insists going elsewhere, provide him with more than one litter tray and place in the areas he goes. Who said a rabbit can. This can just mean your rabbit is marking his/her territory, don. Never hit or shout at your rabbit. You need to try and discipline them in a firm, calm collective way and not stress them out. It will help to decide beforehand what areas (inside and out) are ok and safe and what ares are to be out of bounds. Teaching them . Say their name a lot too. You can use a bell or rattle to get their attention or you can use a plant spray set on mist spray to help discipline them. Remember to praise them too when they do obey you. Free range exercise in the garden. Gradually increase the exercise area, this will help your rabbit to know where to go when it’s time to go back in. Never leave your bunny in the garden alone. Always supervise their free range exercise time. If you have large areas of garden or flower beds that are out of bounds, consider a metal play pen unfolded to separate off this area easily. These pens cover a large area when unfolded, just make sure they are secured and can. Tv remote controls, ornaments, books and photo frames are just a few things to move out of reach. Also house plants as they could be toxic to your rabbit. Even if they are not toxic, you will no doubt find them either toppled over or the soil rearranged over the floor at one time or another. Always provide plenty of safe fun alternatives to distract your rabbit. Its no good distracting them from something and they have nothing else to go to as they will just keep trying. Remember to praise them when they do go to the safe alternative. See Boredom Busters for ideas on safe, fun alternative toys to create. Make sure furniture has no tight small gaps where your rabbit could become stuck. Move furniture to cover electrical cables or use plastic casing to cover exposed wires. To block gaps to no go areas, if possible, move the furniture together. Sometimes your rabbit may just go at the furniture because a gap is not big enough to get through. If it is a gap you are happy for the rabbit to get into and it is safe, then consider moving the furniture so the gap is wider. You will probably find your rabbit won. Take time to watch your rabbit and get ready to say . Keep doing this until they no longer show interest. New items of furniture will always need to be investigated by your bunny. They will want to scent it. Watch over them, allow them to scent it and get ready to say . Also metal carpet dividers can be of interest to your bunny. Use draught excluders to cover the end of carpets that your rabbit may be chewing (like at patio doors) These are also good for covering corners too. Use mats or tiles to cover corners or open areas. Use galvanised wire panels, cut into rectangles and bed round corners of walls that your rabbit is showing interest in. You can also bend them round furniture too. Always take care with reclining furniture or pull out sofa beds etc as these can be dangerous if your rabbit gets caught up in them and you are unaware they are there. Block small gaps like under sofas/cabinets where they can crawl into with a panel of ply wood or cushions. Natural behaviour. Daily routines. They are most active early morning and evening so make sure this is the time they have their exercise and all the toys they need to keep their minds active. So even though you probably won. They sleep during the day so make sure they have an area that allows them to have the peace and quiet they need. They can also use this area to hide in when they feel unsafe or threatened. They love cleanliness. Bunnies are very clean animals so make sure their accommodation is clean too. It can look like they are saying their prayers when cleaning & wetting their front paws. Dealing with aggression. If you come across aggression in your rabbit then its because he/she is unhappy or feels threatened. Most rabbits that have been neglected or had a history of bad upbringing will be shy and nervous. They will be likely to show aggression as this would be their way to protect themselves. With lots of patience and time you can teach the bunny to learn to trust humans again and the aggression should be a thing of the past. Rabbits hate being picked up! This is because they are prey animals and it makes them feel unsafe and vulnerable. It is always best to fuss & play with them while they are on the floor. Learn to gain their trust slowly. Sit with a treat in your hand and be patient. He may not be facing you and not showing an interest, but if his ears are moving he is secretly listening. Back to the top. Back to Bunny Care home page. The 6. 2- year- old said she endured sleepless nights and severe sweats, which left her 'literally wrung out' when she stopped taking the hormone therapy. Miss Wark began taking HRT after having a hysterectomy at the age of 4. This operation caused her body to stop producing the female sex hormone oestrogen, catapulting her straight into menopause, and she began taking HRT the day after to limit the symptoms. But after reading a 2. HRT and increased risks of breast cancer, the presenter stopped taking the pills.'I instantly stopped taking the drug. And wham bam: there I went through a 'hard menopause',' Miss Wark said.'Suddenly I had no oestrogen at all. The most disconcerting side effects were disturbed sleep and night sweats, waking up literally wrung out.'I learnt to be thankful for the nights when I had a good sleep, and kept – and still keep – a notebook beside my bed to write things down so I don't fret about forgetting. The tumultuous nights have persisted, though to a lesser extent.'An estimated one million British women currently take HRT in an effort to tackle the symptoms of the menopause, which include hot flushes, headaches and depression. Half of them take the combined form, which contains both oestrogen and progestogen. It works to alleviate symptoms by replacing oestrogen and progesterone as the body stops producing them. But while it can transform the lives of many women, research since the 1. HRT can also raise the risk of breast cancer, sparking a 2. HRT's risks and benefits. Last year, a major study found women who take a common form of HRT are nearly three times as likely to get breast cancer. CONFLICTING ADVICE OVER THERAPY Hormone replacement therapy first became available in the UK in the 1. Doctors found it countered the worst symptoms of the menopause, such as mood swings and headaches, and reduced the risk of diseases such as osteoporosis. But in the 1. 99. US and UK began looking into whether HRT brought side effects of its own. The research, published in 2. HRT increased the risk of breast cancer and heart problems. This is thought to be because the growth of some cancers are driven by hormones. The number of women taking the pills halved and many doctors stopped prescribing them. In recent years experts have stressed that only an extra eight women in 1,0. But research last year suggests it is in fact 2. Mother- of- two Miss Wark also described the 'medical menopause' brought on by her hysterectomy, which she underwent following a 'difficult birth' nine years earlier. She told the Daily Telegraph: 'The operation essentially catapulted me straight into menopause; since that meant my body would literally stop producing oestrogen overnight, I started HRT the next day.'Once she had recovered from the operation, Miss Wark said she was 'bouncing with good health, in no small measure because of the HRT'. But she added: 'I was to come down with a bump: in 2. Women's Health Initiative Study found links between HRT and increased risks of breast cancer .. In common with thousands of other women, I instantly stopped taking the drug.'Miss Wark has now started taking HRT again. She was persuaded by a meeting with Dr Heather Currie, chairman of the British Menopause Society, while filming The Insiders' Guide to the Menopause, which airs on BBC2 Scotland tonight. She said: 'Discovering Heather was on HRT was an absolute eye- opener for me: she says the revised guidance is clear, that HRT only increases the risk of breast cancer if you are already predisposed. The Untold Story (Radio Edit. Additional information. Genres Electronic / Dance. Portions of content provided byCensor Rating: UAbout M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story. Mahi, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, is a sporting icon. The Indian cricket team captain who took over from Rahul Dravid and led the team to incredible heights including the 2. ICC Cricket World Cup victory. But what led a nondescript young man to become the idol of every sports lover in the country? What trials and tribulations did this enthusiastic boy from Ranchi face on his path to becoming a world- renowned celebrity? This Sushant Singh Rajput starer holds out quite a large promise – to draw cricket fans away from their television sets and to bring them to watch their favourite Dhoni’s story on the silver screen. While the story is based on M. Dhoni’s life, it takes a rounded view of the many aspects of an aspirant’s life – from the traditional bias against a sporting career, to the pressures of conforming with social norms, from politics in higher echelons of sports, to love and disappointment. Plot. The first half of the M. Dhoni: The untold Story is a rather straight forward affair. Young Mahi is interested in sports and catches the eye of his coach. Struggling between domestic pressures to pursue education and a regular career and his desire to live up to his sports potential, Dhoni overcomes various hurdles (with a bit of luck) to make his mark. The young lad is ambitious and dreams big. His father is rather keen on his education and . With a herculean effort, Mahi wades through life to decide that Cricket shall be his future. The second half of the movie is the story of cricketer Dhoni. It covers a number of aspects (read challenges) that an ambitious life brings. Starting from the politics at play in team selection at the BCCI level to love life and disappointments, from team support and pressure to perform to glitzy stardom, the second half is a look at Dhoni as we know him. Performances. Sushant Singh Rajput’s performance stands out through the movie. The actor certainly has worked hard at getting his strokes and technique right – plausible enough to pass off as one of India’s best cricketing icons. Co- actors Anupam Kher, Bhumika Chawla, and Herry Tangri stand out in their short but emotive performances. Kiara Advani and Disha Patani were quite marginalized, but, in all fairness, the movie was not about Dhoni’s romances and did not deserve much focus. The first half of the movie, while predictable, is successful in keeping the viewer’s attention glued to the screen. Those who understand the frustrations of a small town life and having to choose between one’s dreams and difficult realities will appreciate the pace and the drama. The second half of the movie rather disappoints. The expectation was to see the man behind the celebrity and to catch the behind- the- scene locker room action fell flat. The song and dance routine seemed an imposition and in an effort to highlight Dhoni’s contribution to the Indian cricket team’s success, the role of the others have been completely ignored, not merely downplayed. Music. Despite the fact that Amaal Mallik has composed the music for almost all the songs in M. Dhoni – The Untold Story, the variety is incredible.
